Kilmainham Gaol is one of the largest unoccupied gaols in Europe, covering some of the most heroic and tragic events in Ireland's emergence as a modern nation from 1780s to the 1920s. It is one of the most historic sites in Dublin and a must see for sight seers!
It held many famous Nationalists and Republicans throughout the years of its operation. The leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising were also executed here. The prison was closed in 1924 and is now one of the most visited heritage sites in Ireland.
The Gaol gives the visitor a dramatic and realistic insight into what is was like to have been confined during the 18th, 19th & early 20th century. The guided tours provide visitors with a panoramic insight into some of the most profound, disturbing and inspirational themes of modern Irish history.
